Toronto

As well as being the provincial capital of Ontario, it has the largest urban population of any Canadian City. The city it self has a population of over 2.7 million. And the total metropolitan area exceed 5.9 million. This is truly a global city and possibly the world’s most multicultural. It is a center for arts, culture, finance, and business. It also has a huge strength in sport. All four of the main North American sports, basket ball, baseball ice hockey and gridiron football, are fully represented in Toronto by world class teams. Plus there is a lot more as well.

Visiting Toronto

There is Lula Land for Latin The Reservoir lounge in central Toronto is famous for jazz, blues and , R&B. Lees Palace and Dakota Tavern for hard rockers and metal heads. Plus the Coda for house and club music and the Mod Club for retro 60’s music.

Just watch the prices. A cocktail may set you back $12.00 US. A figure of $324.00 US a month seems likely. This will all depend on how much a club costs, food and of course drinks at the bar. If you intend to enjoy your self, probably make sure you have a budget to cover this. This is very difficult to estimate, but anything from $300.00 to $1000,00 US may be needed. Of course with care you could do a lot on a lot less.

Conclusion: getting to Toronto.

There are a whole number of different scenarios. Are you a young professional with a family plus a job offer in Toronto? You could be a back packer or student on a gap year. You may aim to work in Toronto on a work visa.

It would be best to look carefully at those companies that can help you with this. There are a number of tour companies than can help you with a package holiday. A longer stay will need careful work on sorting out visas. Canada has a very logical, straight forward and fair system. With a good company behind you, this should not be much of a problem.

Cheap return flights seem to be now in the region of $900 plus Australian dollar.

A quick note on exchange rates.

The Canadian dollar has mainly been used here. The Australian to Canadian dollar rate at present is convenient very close The Canadian dollar to the US dollar is .80 at the moment. These three currencies do need to be checked pretty regularly. Over all movement has not be great between them. However, any major political or economic crises will impact on these rates pretty quickly.

Banff is in the province of Alberta in Canada. It is also in Banff National Park and is part of the Rockies. It has the Bow falls and Spray and Bow rivers near by. Banff ranks as Canada’s most popular tourist destination. It also has hot springs. Its most important attraction is outdoor sports. These include skiing, hiking and bike scrabbling.

The nearest airport is Calgary and it has a regular “roam” bus service. The overall permanent population is comparatively small ranging from around 8000 to 9000.

It is most likely that you will visiting Banff as a tourist, but you could be there on a working holiday.

Overall Banff is more expensive than the Canadian average However, food, transportation, housing and health care all come out lower in the overall average. So, being some distance from major centers of population, costs do not seem to be too much of a problem.

The first set of costs are basic “basket” of items which broadly follow the same broad trends across most of Canada. These prices will be in Canadian Dollars.

Restaurants

  • Cost of a meal in an in expensive restaurant will be $17.00. This ranges $10.00 to $23.50.

  • A three course meal for two in a “mid range” will cost on average $70.00. This can average out between $44.00 and $80.00.

  • A McDonald’s “Mac Meal” or similar combination meal, will be $9.00. This can vary between $7.00 and $10.00.

  • Half a liter of Canadian draft beer will be $5.25. This averages between $4.00 and $7.00.

  • A 33cl imported beer averages out at $6.50. This can range from $5.00 to $8.00.

  • Regular cappuccino will cost $3.88. This varies between $2.00 and $4.50.

  • A 33cl bottle of Pepsi or Coke will cost you $2.15. This ranges from $1.00 to $2.75.

  • A 33cl of bottled water will cost $1.82. This averages between $1.00 to $2.19.

  • A mid range bottle of wine will cost $17.00. This can vary between $10.00 to $20.00.

  • A packet of Marlboro will cost $13.47 on average. These cigarettes can range from $5.67 to $15.00. Again, another big difference.

Taxis

  • Starting price at a normal tariff averages at $3.65. This varies between $3.20 and $5.00.

  • A taxi ride for 1 km on average equals $1.70. A taxi charge can vary between $1.36 and $3.00.

  • Waiting times for an hour, average out at $33.80. Again this varies quite a lot between $12.00 and $45.00!!

General Markets

  • 1 liter of regular milk. Costs on average $2.36. This difference can be between $1.19 and $3.35.

  • 500 grams of white bread will average out at $2.45. This ranges from $0.99 to $3.37.

  • 1 kg of white rice costs $3.50 on average. This can vary between $1.00 and as much as $6.00.

  • A dozen or 12 regular eggs, works out at $3.33. This ranges from $1.75 to $4.50.

  • 1 kg of local Canadian cheese costs $11.74. This can vary between $6.00 and $20.00!

  • 1 kg of boneless, skinless chicken breasts cost on average $11.34. This ranges all the way from $4.00 to $16.00.

  • 1 kg of beef round or similar back leg of beef costs $6.61. This can average between $4.00 and $16.00.

  • 1 kg of apples averages out at $3.00. These can range between $2.00 to $5.05.

  • 1 kg of bananas are $1.70. These vary between $0.78 and $3.00.

  • 1 kg of oranges equal $3.71. This can be between $2.00 and $6.00.

  • 1 kg of tomatoes is $2.84. This varies between $1.85 and $5.00

What is interesting with these figures is the range in prices of different products. This may be more extreme than else where in Canada. So, given Banff is a fairly small town, it would be an idea to hunt around stores and markets, if you are staying in an apartment and can cook. This way you should get a good deal and keep living expenses down.

Renting an apartment in Banff per month.

Again these are prices in Canadian dollars.

  • A 1 bed apartment in the city center averages out at $1,275.00. This can range between $1,200.00 and $1,400.00.

  • A 1 bed apartment outside the city center would be $900.00 on average. This can vary between $800.00 and $1,400.00 a month.

  • A 3 bed apartment in the center of the city will cost you $2,633.33 a month. This ranges from $2,400.00 to $3,000.00.

  • A 3 bed apartment outside the center will be $2,133.33 a month. This can vary between $2,400.00 and $3,000.00.

Cheap Hotels

There are rooms on offer at $70.00 US, a night, if you look for them.

Night life in Banff

Partying

If you think that Banff is a quiet out of the way holiday resort, you could not be more wrong. It has a thriving night life. For those visiting or on work visas, it would be an idea checking this out. The newly opened Dancing Sasquatch runs all week. It has two bars and a great DJ.

The Hoodoo lounge is a quieter version of the Dancing Sasquatch. Closed on Wednesdays and Sundays, it is open between 9 pm and 2 am.

Aurora Night club and lounge has a large dance floor with visiting international DJ s, as well as live entertainment.

Eating

After partying, you will need some where to eat. There is an excellent Italian restaurant called the Aardvark Pizza and Sub.

In contract there is Wild Bill’s Legendary saloon with a distinct “country and western” flavor. This serves up fajitas, burgers and steaks.

St Jame’s Gate Olde Irish Pub has 30 draft beers, 50 Scotches and 10 real Irish Whiskey.

Live Music

If you are into Jazz and R&B, this is on offer every Thursday at the Saltlik Lounge. The

Elk and Oarsman, show cases local bands. Metal heads can go to the Devil’s Gap.

Chilling

For those that want a quiet time there are many good coffee shops in Banff. Evelyn’s Coffee bar is noted for it’s home grown products and good coffee.

The Cost of Enjoying Yourself.

With a population of around 8000, Banff has 4 million plus visitors a year. If you are staying in a cheap hotel certain parts of the year are cheaper than others. This can vary between $200US during peak, for a hotel room for the night. Holiday seasons from mid June through to September. However, mid October through to start of the Christmas period see hotel rooms drop to as low as $80 to $115.00 US.

As for booze, prices do average out at around $4 to $6 and $5 plus for a pint in Canadian dollars. As with many places, check out if there is a “happy hour”, for seasoned drinkers.

Specialist imported beers and spirits such as whiskey, will cost more. If you have time in Banff find out where the locals go and avoid the obvious tourist spots.

Getting to Banff

You can get a deal as cheap as just over $300.00 AUS, return to Banff from Australia. This will take you to Calgary, Red Deer, Castlegar and Lethbridge, the nearest airports.

All inclusive holiday deals including hotels and flights seem to start at around $1200 plus AUS, for a week.

For those who are combining a trip to Banff, with a work visa, then it would make a lot of sense if you contacted a good visa company, that will be able to sort out all the details necessary.

Canadian working holiday visas are very straightforward and logical, with the proper help and paper work there should not be a problem.

Finally

The Canadian US dollar rate is .80. The Australian and Canadian dollar rates are pretty close. It pays to keep an eye on currency rates as this could impact your financing.

Introduction

To start with accommodation needs to be defined. This can extend all the way from a cheap hostel for a few weeks during a brief holiday all the way through to a permanent residence, say a four bedroom detached house.

All of this will depend on your individual circumstances. This could include staff accommodation if you are on a working holiday. It could also be shared accommodation.

Student Accommodation Options.

Hotels

You have sorted out all your student visa applications. The next problem is finding a place to stay. If you need to find a hotel to start with then you must book in advance. Hotels are a very popular form of accommodation for tourists. There will be 90% full booking from May until August. Going in “blind” anywhere will be very difficult.

You tend to pay for what you get. The quality of hotels in Canada is good overall, but this can vary. There will be a difference between the cities and the country, where the country will tend to be cheaper. Plus at the ”cheap” end, the quality tends to be better, as well.

The following prices are in Canadian Dollars. These are for over night stays in hotels. This is the over all Canadian average.

  • Low price range $45-$75.

  • Mid price range $55 – $135

  • Expensive price range $135 – $250

  • Five “star” price range $250 upwards.

Bed and breakfast

This is very much a temporary solution. If you have come to study or work and have not yet sorted out any accommodation, this is one possible option.

They could be in a town house, an apartment or a farmhouse. Most will be registered with a specific professional association. They may not have a private comfort room etc. This is something you may have to share.

The prices vary from $35.00 to $105.00 in Canadian dollars.

YMCA. YWCA and Youth Hostels.

This is probably one of the cheapest and convenient ways of finding shared or communal accommodation. This is also a safe method of finding accommodation as hostels in Canada are regulated, approved and inspected by the Canadian Hosteling Association. Toilets, shower areas, bathrooms and cooking areas are shared. They may not all be “basic”. Some have swimming pools as well as fitness centers. Pre-booking is essential as places fill up quickly

Costs in Canadian dollars

  • Hostels average out at between $10.00 and $20.00 per night.

  • YWCA and the YMCA average out at $24.00 to $45.00 per night.

Home stays

This could be another option for international students wishing to study in Canada. You are given your own private room and become effectively, part of the family. This way you get to learn about Canadian culture and also pick up on language skills, in either English or French. These will be organized through colleges and individual schools. Again in Canadian dollars, costs will include a “placement fee” of $200.00. Monthly charges will vary between $400.00 to $800.00.

Dormitories/Halls of Residence

Universities, Colleges and Schools may have their own accommodation for students. These will usually include a private bedroom, along with shared washrooms, laundry and canteens. The standard cost for these per school year, in Canadian dollars, is $3000.00 to $7500.00. This is a good way to meet and mix with other students.

Commercial Renting for Students

Universities and colleges will often offer listings of available private rented accommodation. There will also be on line sites and adverts in local newspapers.

Real care could be needed in this area. Any lease or agreement with a private landlord will need to be looked at very carefully prior to renting. Visit the accommodation first, as well. This could be well be an expensive option in major Canadian cities. This will also quite probably mean shared accommodation, in order to bring down prices. You may need to get in contact with a provincial tenancy office as well.

This will give you freedom away from the campus, if you are an international college or university student.

Prices, in Canadian dollars, can vary between $250 up to $750 a month, for students.

Working Holiday Accommodation

If you are thinking about going on a working holiday or are looking at a fixed working permit, then accommodation deals and packages could be an important part of this

For example, if you plan to work in a ski resort like Whistler in the Rockies, you could get staff accommodation at a reduced rate.

There are a number of jobs available in hotels and resorts across Canada, baristas, waiters, waitresses, cleaning and maintenance staff etc. Look for those companies that do offer accommodation; not all will.

If accommodation is provided then there is a good chance that you will have to share a room. This will include wash rooms, laundries etc. There could be a demand for a “damage” deposit, and you may have to pay one or two months in advanced rent. Also keep drinking and any other activities to a minimum, to avoid problems.

Major Cities

The cost of accommodation will vary to some extent from city to city. If you plan a gap year or a working holiday, and there is no accommodation included, then you will have to take the average price of reasonably cheap place to stay, into consideration. So you have a good idea of knowing your over all budget before you go.

Toronto

Rented apartments and condos

So in Toronto, a shared house could cost in the region of $500 CAD a month. A one or two bed apartment or condo, depending on where it is, could cost between $1000, to $1,400 CAD a month.

Hotels and Hostels

Again, as with any where else, location is everything in a large city. Again a web site check will show prices ranging from around $50 US, up to $400 US for a two bedroom room. If you are passing through, look at YMCA, YWCA, bed and breakfast and hostel options. This could help to bring the price down. With hostels etc, be prepared fro some communal living.

Montreal

Cheap rented apartments and condos.

Quotes on line for very cheap apartments put some in the range of $600 to $800 CAD a month for one bedroom.

If you are looking for a cheap apartment for two, these can be priced between $700 to $1,200 CAD a month. Bear in mind, these could vary a lot depending upon location.

Hotels and hostels.

These are set of average prices, this time in Canadian dollars

Checking on line, the hotel prices for seem to follow the same pattern noted above. The prices range from $45.00 US to $215.00 US a night. The summer vacation period for most colleges and Universities run between June and August. Some colleges and universities do rent out rooms over this period. So it could be an idea to check this out on line.

This is another set of prices for cheap hotels and hostels in Montreal. These can range from $12.00 US upwards for two. This is a night. For a two bed room apartment, this is $700 to $12,00. Bear in mind the type of neighborhood, and what you plan to do in Montreal, Is this a working holiday or are staying in Montreal for s while, then moving on?

Vancouver

Cheap rented apartments and condos

You can find good rented one bedroom apartment for at around $800 CAD a month, at present, in central Vancouver. These go up to $2000 plus CAD, a month for two bed room apartments This is an option for any one wanting to stay for a fixed short term work contract. Again, if you know you want to stay in Vancouver for a while, say for a year or more, book a cheap hotel first, then explore what apartments and condos are available, on line and via listings. This will give you a better idea what is available, plus what conditions may go with the renting.

Hotels and Hostels

The cheapest deal available could be dormitories. This would be ideal for younger back packers and students on gap years. This can be as low as $15.00 US for a 6 bed dormitory. There are also cheap hotels starting from $39 CAD, a night for two rooms. There are even deals starting at $27 AUS. These can range up to $500 plus AUS, for two bedroom bookings, in better hotels in more central areas.

Longer term Accommodation options.

The options so far have been for younger people probably in their 20’s. Either about to start college or University, or just having left. They could be on an extended work holiday, or on a gap year

There is also a slightly older age group, possibly reaching to middle age. These will be professionals, or individuals with specific skills. They could be offered longer term working visas. They could be looking to emigrate to Canada, as they have a definite work offer there.

These might also include married couples, or partners with dependent children.

In all these cases, they must be sure that any possible future income will match the longer term costs of renting better apartments or houses, or even buying them. Also take into consideration, all the other possible living costs when arriving in Canada.

Differences in Prices

If you are on a longer term working visa, the chances are you may be directed away from the larger cities. This could be to your advantage, if you are moving to Canada, as the price of both renting and buying property could be cheaper. This is especially the case if you are coming across with a partner and possibly a family.

At present Toronto seems to be one of the most expensive places to buy property. House prices in the Greater Toronto area have reached, on average almost, $876.000 CAD. However, the average price in Calgary, is pretty well half that at $478,500 CAD. The overall Canadian average is $451,100 CAD.

Most expensive and Cheapest places to rent

The highest at present is Yellowknife in the far North West, where a three bed apartment would cost you $1,902 CAD a month to rent. Vancouver comes in at number four with $1,631 CAD, for a three bed apartment. Toronto comes in at number six, with $1,515.

The cheapest rented three bed apartment is Shawinigan Quebec Province, where the average price is $659 CAD for a three bed apartment. Victoriaville, the fourth lowest, is $613 CAD for a three bed apartment in Quebec Province. At number nine is Trois Rivieres, Quebec Province, with a three bed apartment costing $631CAD a month.

It is interesting to note that all the cheapest rented accommodation in Canada seems to be in the Quebec Province. Looking at New Brunswick on the east coast, rented three bedroom apartments range from $625 CAD up to $2000 CAD.

It could be that Quebec Province is one of the cheapest locations to move to in Canada. There could be a possible problem if you can’t speak French, but this should not be a restriction in moving to Quebec Province, if your English is up to a good standard.

Conclusion: Moving to Canada from Australia

If you have a good long term contract lined up or a permanent placement that it would make a lot of sense to carefully investigate and evaluate what you can do. This is especially the case if you want to buy property.

The first thing, once a location has been sorted out, is to look at contacting professionals in that area, such as reputable estate agents. They will know the costs, taxation and regulations that need to be looked into. If it looks too good, it probably is. Make realistic decisions. You will also need to understand insurance and possible mortgage requirements, and get professional help with this. You may need a cash down payment of 35% if you are technically a non resident when you wish to go ahead with a purchase.

You may have a property to sale in Australia, which could cover the cost of purchase in Canada.

The Australian dollar has appreciated in recent years. This gives it a rough parity with the Canadian dollar. It is always wise to keep a close eye on these two currencies as well as the US dollar to see what the long term trends may be.

A deposit of $250,000 AUS, for a property worth in Canada at say $750,000 CAD, might incur large transfer fees in a bank to bank transfer. It is worth while looking into other safe ways of transferring large sums internationally.

With planning, none of this is impossible. There are good trust worthy outside agencies that can help you with all of this as well.

Finally note Currencies.

A lot of online sites do not state which dollar they are using. If it is a general world based site, then there is a good chance that the currency stated will be in US dollars. If the web site has “AU” at the end this may well mean that prices are quoted in Australian dollars. If the ending is “CA” this could well mean that the prices are in Canadian dollars. However, don’t take any of that for granted. A close look at any site is needed to see what currency they are using. This is not always that easy.

At this particular point in time the US to Canadian dollar equals 1.24. The Australian dollar to the Canadian dollar is now very close at .99. Again, keep a “weather eye” on currencies. A major economic or political crisis could see a currency crash. The British pound has dropped 15% due to the UK leaving the EU. The money will soon flood else where, usually the US dollar. It is wise to keep all this in mind if you are making major changes in your life.

Introduction Skiing

Canada has an amazing range of locations and landscape , ideal for anyone wanting to visit a winter sports venue or experience the Canadian winter.

There is a lot to choose from. On the west coast there are the rocky mountains, and the provinces of Alberta and British Colombia. These can match any where else in the world. Do not forget Quebec province and Ontario. Plus the, the maritime provinces, on the east coast of Canada, also have a lot to offer. For those interested in skiing, there is something to be found in all the Canadian provinces.

British Colombia

If you are able to visit Canada during the snow season, November to April each year, these are some of the main centers. Temperatures can drop really low in Canada. Another advantage that British Colombia has, it that it can stay relatively mild, being on the west coast., but the snow can last. So there can be snow still on Black Comb Mountain, Whistler, British Colombia in April.

Whistler is the number one ski resort in Canada, which is just two hours from Vancouver. British Colombia. It has the most skiing resorts in Canada. The Grouse mountains are only 15 minutes from Vancouver. These too, can provide a good skiing experience.

British Colombia has six different tourist regions. For specialists there are “back country” ski destinations, “cat skiing” and “ heli-skiing”.

Vancouver it self, is a sophisticated and exciting city. It is well worth a visit.

Alberta

The Rocky Mountains run through Alberta. An important center from skiing is Banff National Park. There are three prime mountain resorts, These are Red Deer, Medicine Head and Edmonton. They are resorts Package deals can be found for each of these centers. These can suit families and are easy to get too. This will include snow boarding as well as skiing along with other activities.

Quebec

Quebec Province

Quebec province may not have the same mountain ranges as British Colombia and Alberta, but there is skiing there. This includes the Laurentians, Quebec city and the area around it, Charlevoix and the Eastern townships. Quebec province does have one big advantage. You are close to both Montreal and Quebec City. Montreal is a major international city with a lot to offer. Quebec City is also very interesting historically.

From near by Toronto, it is also easy to reach Mount Tremblant, by aircraft, pretty quickly.

Climate and Clothing

One thing to note, Basnff can reach – 11c in January, whereas in Quebec province temperatures can drop to as low as -25c . So be very well prepared if you go skiing or for any other winter sport there. Add in the “wind chill” and temperatures can drop really low. Full thermal clotting and the classic Canadian, winter coats with a fur hood, plus the correct boots, grooves etc, are needed. Throw in a fur hat with the flaps for good measure, plus snow shoes. If you are out in the extreme cold without all this proper gear, expect frost bite and worse, pretty quickly.

Ontario

The highest slope in Ontario is the Blue Mountains at 750 feet. However, there are options. There are hills and ski systems available around Toronto you can also try mountain biking and hiking in the summer months. There are a number of resort options open all the year round. The Ontario season starts in late December through to March.

What makes an excellent ski resort?

A variety of different slopes and conditions helps. This means a location would suit a pro skier as well as offer opportunities for beginners on less demanding slopes.

Along with this, there are the amenities, that go with a good ski resort. Whistler is a good example of a resort with a variety of very good restaurants and shops. The continuous lift system is one of the longest in the world. It also hosted the Winter Olympics in 2010.

The mountain resort in Lake Louise, in the Rocky Mountain Banff national park, has also a great variety of skiing opportunities. It is also known for its apres skiing, after skiing activities. It is again a place where pro skiers like to visit.

Sunshine village just 15 minutes outside of Banff, can offer up to 15 feet of snow ( around 4 meters), during the winter. This gives skiers fresh snow to ski on each season. Again, there are a variety slopes and conditions to ski on.

If you are looking for style and atmosphere. You can find this in Mount Tremblant in the Laurentian mountains, in Quebec province. This is rated one of the best ski resorts in eastern Canada. This will also give you the full flavor French Canadian culture.

Job Opportunities in Canadian Skiing resorts.

For an outsider wanting the experience of working in a ski resort, and experiencing what is has to offer, then the hospitality industry would be a good start.

This would suit any one on a short term working holiday visa, plus students on gap years etc. These will apply to the winter season, mainly November through to April.

All the major centers will have a lot to offer.

There are many large hotels associated with these resorts. Look at your skill set, and get a resume to match this.

If you have had previous experience working in a bar, as a barista, or working and serving in a cafe or restaurant, this could be a big plus. There will be openings for seasonal workers in bars, restaurants and cafes. This will be serving, waiting, and working behind the bar. There could be roles cleaning and helping to serve food in hotel restaurants and establishments outside.

If you have a background in culinary skills, you have worked as a chef, and have prepared and cooked food in restaurants etc, this could also be a big advantage.

There may be jobs for cleaners, lift operators and hotel guides. Again, those of you with admin skills in officer work plus IT experience may find openings.

Carpenters and any one with trade and craft skills could find work in maintenance departments in ski resorts and hotels.

If you are there long enough you can pick up enough experience and work, not just as a hotel guide, but also as a local guide.

If you can already ski and snow board, there may be a chance to become a ski instructor. A huge bonus would be coming to Canada with recognized skiing qualifications. Look into the possibility of picking up these skills once you are there.

Of course, unless you are a pro skier yourself, you will probably need to start with beginners.

So, experience of working with children, could be a good card to play. Your may have enough knowledge to get across basic skills, plus help with snow boarding and skating. Making this a learning and fun activity for kids. This could apply equally in a large hotel, where fun activities may be needed for bored kids.

Look to what you have. A good agency could guide you with this, and will know the possibilities that are available. There will be time to ski yourself, and have a bit of fun while you are in the resort.

You have gained employment in a ski resort in the Canadian Rockies. You may have secured a short term working contract. You could be a student, working in a gap year. There could be the possibility of a permanent job. What can you expect working in a famous ski resort?

To look at whats on offer.

These resorts can be world famous. They will be fully equipment ski resorts, that can offer skiing opportunities for serious professionals all the way through the beginners. There will be other winter sports such as snow boarding.

When you look at the Canadian Rockies, you have the cosmopolitan city of Vancouver to the west, and close to the Rockies. In the province of British Colombia. On the other side of the Rockies, on the east, in Alberta province, you have the city of a Calgary and above that Edmonton. To the side of the Rockies on the east, there is the national park and town of Banff. Above that there is the large Jasper national park.

To look at some examples.

There is the Sunshine village, part of the Banff national park in Alberta Canada. There are restaurants, bars and shops.

Whistler in British Colombia, is a full developed skiing resort. Whistler hosted the 2010 Winter Olympics. Whistler village is found at the bottom or base of Whistler mountain. This has hotels, condos, restaurants, shops, cafes and bars.

From this you can see that you do not have to worry, if you are not a fully qualified ski instructor. If you already have experience in bar work work, or catering, then there will be opportunities. There could be openings for service work in the hotels. There may be the need for maintenance staff, guides and instructors. If you are there for any lengthy of time, then help could be given for this.

OK, the life you can expect there, starting with employment possibilities.

Going on line and typing in job opportunities in the Canadian Rockies will soon throw up a lot of possibilities.

Food and beverage jumps out immediately if you look for work. Previous experience will be needed along with a valid Canadian work visa. Some jobs may ask for previous skiing experience.

The type of work covers “front of house” activities in major resorts and hotels. If you have a good rapport with people then this sort of work could suit you.. You may be a cashier at a bar of restaurant. Maybe work as a waitress or waiter, or a bistro or food station attendant.. there are possibilities in all these different areas.

There are also possibilities for “back of house” workers. This includes food preparation. If you have had a background as a chef or sous chef, you may be able to find work in these roles. Be prepared to work hard, and be able to take the pressure. If you feel you are up for this and are qualified, give it a go. This could look great on any future resume or CV.

There is cleaning work as a maid in many resort hotels. Plus work in large establishments shipping and receiving. That is making sure inventories and stocks are maintained in say a big hotel or resort.

Plus roles as guides in hotels could be on offer. Again, after initial training, this could be a role for anyone who likes helping people.

Extras

Look out for the perks and extras that may be on offer with any of these jobs. These may include reduced accommodation fees , as well as discounted food. You could get free skiing and snow boarding lessons. There could be season pass to skiing very near you. Specific staff discounts in food beverages and products in the resort.

If you have a background in sales, then there could well be openings in a resort like Whistler, A snow boarding and skiing school will need some one who can give advice and sale specific services the school has to offer. This role could apply to other outlets in a resort like Whistler. This would suit someone with previous experience in sales, plus who is very confident with people.

An example of this is a guest relations host. This is someone who can relay accurate information about the facilities and opportunities available at the resort in general. If you are working in a hotel then this would also relate specifically to the hotel. Again, good people skills are essential as you will be there to sort out guests concerns and worries. Success would people wanting to return again to that specific hotel or resort. This could be partly down to the role you performed in helping people.

For a more rugged job there are openings for snow lift hosts. You will be expected to get up early and clear away any snow from the lift. Plus making sure then loading ramps are kept clear of snow and debris. You will need to look after any one using the lift and dealing with any problems that might arise.

Average temperatures Banff for example, can drop to -16c in January, so full winter clothing is needed if you are to work outside. Low temperatures will be a shock to start with, but if you keep active this will not be a problem. In central provinces like Quebec, winter temperatures can drop to -20c or more plus wind chill. Being totally covered up, outside will be essential there.

Alternatively, a far warmer variation could be a lift attendant in a hotel.

For those with specific skill sets there are maintenance jobs available. Winter conditions, snow and frost, can take a toll of buildings and structures. If you have a background in the building trade, painting and decorating and carpentry, then there are openings. These are more long term jobs and may last more than the season. It would be a good idea to look at what work visa you would need for this post. Being in a supervisory role would look good again, on a resume or CV.

Also, if you do have qualifications as a ski instructor then there are many openings. You will need the experience and the right qualifications. However, there are opening for non specialists. For very young children, 4 to 6 , there are special schools for snow boarding and skiing. A background of working with children will help. You will be given specific instructions about what to do, when you get there.

During the winter season, mid November through to April, many jobs will be seasonal and temporary. However, many of these resorts have a lot to offer all the year round, in terms of hiking the scenery etc.

So there could be longer term opportunities. If you want to find a job in the Canadian Rockies, play to your strengths. With the help of a good agency, you will be able to see what skills, qualifications and experience can be used to find you a good work placement.

All Work And No Play

If you are fairly young and you have got yourself a good seasonal job in a Canadian Rockies ski resort then you will have to some time to enjoy yourself.

This will depend upon the hours and shifts you work, but you should have some time to yourself. If you have a good enough income, you should have enough to spend while you are there and maybe save a bit.

The major resorts do have a lot to offer,. This will also give you the chance to meet new friends from different corners of the world.

In Banff, if you are a Country and Western fan, there is Wild Bill’s Legendary Saloon, offering live bands as well as good food. This includes cuisine from Western Canada, plus a range of beers, wines and spirits. Aurora is for any one into club and house music. They have the latest sounds plus visiting Djs. The Hoodoo bar offers a range of drinks, bars and Djs. The Dancing Sasquatch offers an amazing interior along with a mix of good music.

Canmore, Alberta, is on the edge of the Banff National Park and 81 K (50 miles) from Calgary. You will find Hooligans there, with Djs and good music. There is also the Legends pub with live entertainment and a dance floor that can take 240.

Jasper, in Jasper Park Alberta offers the Atha B Night club with a range of sound systems and karaoke. This is part of the Atha B Hotel. Pete’s Night Club offers live bands, sport on big screens and free pool,

For those on the west of the Rockies, then accessing Vancouver should not be difficult, if you want a good night out. There are a huge range of bars, clubs and venues.

You may not want to go clubbing and drinking all the time. The Rockies offer an amazing landscape. It would be worth while just hiking and visiting places. Plus learning new skills, like getting into skiing snow boarding and skating. Plus if you get the opportunity going to see an ice hockey match, one of the premier sports in Canada,

Plus , if you have put some money aside, there will be shopping opportunists in the major resorts and cities.

There is a world of possibilities if you find work in the Canadian Rockies. There is the experience of the work itself and what you will gain from being in this amazing part of the world.

Conclusion

To help you find a work placement and to sort out the visas plus other details, it makes a lot of sense finding a good agency that can help you. They will guide you through the application process. This will be combined with matching your skills to any possible job there may be out there.

The first thing to realise is that the Canadian tax system still expects you to fill out forms declaring taxable earnings. In many countries correcting over paying and under paying your tax is done automatically. This is not the case in Canada, forms have to be filled in.

Tax Year

In Canada, the tax year runs from January through to December. Your pay slips could well show tax being deducted. You will need to keep these for reference. You will need to check as well, that the correct amount of tax has been paid. The tax season usually starts every February. This covers the previous year. For example, the tax you owe in 2016, will be paid in on February 2017. The dead line will be the end of April. If you still owe taxes, and you have not declared them, after this date, you could be liable for a penalty.

Refunds

There are a number of things to take into consideration. You will not get a 100% tax refund. Even though, if you are on a Canada working holiday visa, and you are not eligible for Canadian Employment Insurance (EI) and a Canadian Pension Plan (CPP), these will be deducted from your pay.

T4

The T4 is an information slip. This will show a summary of the money you have earned, along with the taxes you have paid in. There is a legal obligation, in Canada, for your employer to supply you with this T4 summary. You must have this in order to fill out your tax form. This should get to you by the end of February. This can be sent to you, by your employer, either by email or post.

If you leave Canada at an earlier point in the year, you will have to wait for the same date to file your Canadian taxation.

There are ways of getting refunds, even if you leave Canada early in the tax year. The T4 will be needed as well as filling out your tax forms. These refunds can be work related, medical and transportation costs.

Completing the Process

Forms can be downloaded from various sources online. The official agency is the Canadian Revenue Agency CRA. There is an official web site, NETFILE, set up by the CRA, where the whole process of filling out your tax returns, can be done on line.

You can buy and down load software which can do a lot of this for you. This can cost between $15 to $20 CAD. This can do the calculations for you, then you down load the forms. The cheaper software is usually restricted to one user, so you van not share this software around.

You need to be vary clear as well, what your residency status is. Are you applying as a resident or non resident.

Forms can also be posted. You can readily find forms from Canadian Post and Service Canada offices. These can then be posted on.

Using legal Companies and Accountants to Help You.

This might be an option, but legal companies may not have enough experience in this work, and may not consider doing it. Given they may not have much experience with working holiday tax returns. Costs start from $50 CAD upwards.

There are internal tax specialist companies in Canada, who will do all the work for you.

There are international options as well. If you are from Australia and you have undertaken a Canada working holiday visa, there are on line companies like Taxback.Com. This company will give you a free estimate then charge a fee depending on the work there is. They will also help you with getting back refunds.

Quebec a Special Case

All the other provinces and territories in Canada work under the same general federal tax system. However, Quebec has its own system. The provincial government collects its own taxation. This comes under the Ministere du Revenu du Quebec. For those of you in Quebec Province and say working there or Montreal, will have to check out their systems. They will be more than likely parallel the general Federal systems.

Some Technical Points: Resident or Non Resident.

If you are on a short term working holiday for a year or two, it is highly likely that you will be classified as non resident in Canada. This applies if you are resident somewhere else. You do not have “sufficient ties” to Canada. However, if you have worked in Canada for more than 183 tax days, you might be considered a resident

A resident in Canada is classified s some one who owns and rents a property, has a spouse or partner, and dependent children. You have a permanent job, own a car etc and have Canadian health insurance. Plus a Canadian passport and or a Canadian drivers license.

So it is highly likely, therefore, that if you are undertaking a working holiday job in Canada, you are non resident.

Requirements if you are non resident

As a non resident you would be expected to fill out a form which is “Income Tax and Benefit Return of non Residents and Deemed Residents of Canada.”

Added to this you will need an ITN number, this is an Individual Tax Number, this for anyone with out a social security number.

There are various ways of getting this on line. The best way is to apply via the official Canadian Web site for a “T1261 Canadian Revenue Agency Individual Tax Number (ITN) for non Residents.”

Conclusion

You will need the help of a good agency to help you with all of this. If you to keep an eye on the date. Keep all your payment slips. You must make sure you get a T4 form from your employer, when you make your tax return. Sort out a ITN number. If you are in Quebec province, look into the systems there. Again, there are international as well as Canadian agencies that can help you fill out the tax return. See if you are eligible for any tax refunds. A good agency should be able to deal with this.

This should not be too difficult. Get good outside help and be systematic about all of this and there should be no problems.

The SIN number is your social insurance number.  You need this  9 digit SIN number,  if you are to find work in Canada. This will also give you access to  Canadian government benefits and programs further useful for Canadian working holiday.

Once the SIN number is issued, you are solely responsible for it.  It can not be used by anyone else, only you.  You must keep the number in a secure location. Do not walk or travel around with the number on you.

Please note, the SIN number will not now be issued on a plastic card.  The policy now, is for any new SIN number to be sent via the post. However, your existing number on a plastic card can still be used. If you have a new born child, you need to apply for the SIN number through the Newborn Registration Service.

Service Canada Centre

One very simple way of obtaining your SIN number is to visit a Service Canada Centre.  Details about their location can be found by visiting the official Canadian immigration web site.

You will need to have primary proof of identity documents.  The documentation must be either written in English or French.  Photocopies are not accepted.

You must submit and show you have a current and up to date passport, if you are a non Canadian national.

If you are a permanent resident , you will need to show the following documents:

Permanent Residents

  • A permanent residents card. This must have been issued by the CIC, Citizenship and Immigration Canada.
  • A Confirmation of Permanent Residence.  The CIC issues this.  You will need a passport or for example a Canadian driver’s license, issued by a territory of province. This provides an alternative official photo identification.   Confirmation of Permanent Residence is accepted for up to a year after you became a permanent resident.  You will need to use the permanent residents card after that date.
  • You will need a Record of Landing, issued by the Citizenship and Immigration Canada, before June 28th
  • You may need a Verification of Landing. This was issued by the CIC. This will only be acceptable if there is a need to amend your SIN or confirmation is wanted regarding an existing SIN.
  • Verification of Status/Status Verification, issued by the CIC. Again, this will only be acceptable if there is a need to amend your SIN or confirmation is wanted regarding an existing SIN.

Temporary Residents

  • You  have a work permit from the CIC, Citizenship and Immigration Canada.
  • You have a study permit. Issued by the CIC, Citizenship and Immigration Canada.  This can either be a study permit, which has the provision for students who “may accept employment ” or  “may work”, during their time as a student, or a study permit and a “confirmation to work off campus” letter from the CIC which was issued before June 28th, 2002. This is to check that you can apply for an amended study permit.
  • You might need a Visitor Record, from the CIC, stating that you are allowed to work in Canada. You may also need a Visitor Record, issued under the 186 or 187 Immigration and Refugee Protection Regulations. Alternatively, you may need a Visitor Record from the repealed Immigration Act. A Visitor Record can also be obtain from a member of the clergy.
  • You can also obtain a Diplomatic Identity Card, along with a note of permission of employment.  This is issued by the Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development Canada.

Proof of Identity Documents

There will be the need for supporting legal documentation if the name on your main identity document, such as your passport has been changed or is different.  These supporting documents include:

  • A marriage certificate,  marriage statement or a record solemnizing a marriage with your family name, after you are married.  Please note that in Quebec this is not applicable, after April 1st1981, no mater where you were married.
  • A Court Order or a Legal Change of Name Document.
  • A Notarial Certificate, or a Notarial Adoption Certificate.  This is issued by the original country for a child who is adopted abroad.
  • A Request to Amend Record of Landing.  This is issued by the Citizenship and Immigration Canada CIC.  This is to amend either a Confirmation of Permanent Residents or a Record of Landing.
  • Divorce Decree documents from out side of Canada are not accepted.

A SIN Application For Another Person.

This is for parents or guardians applying for a Sin Application for children younger than 12 years old, at a  Service Canada point of service.

This should include:

  • The child’s individual proof of identity documents.
  • You must bring valid employee identification showing your  photo ID, or an equivalent government issued ID.
  • An original document or a certified copy that states and confirms you are the legal guardian, issued by a Canadian province or territory.  If this is Quebec, a notarized will would be acceptable.
  • If you are a provincial employee,  you can obtain a letter of authorization issued by a province or territory, stating that you are the legal representative of a child. This does not apply to court appointed lawyers or individuals appointed by the court, this letter is not needed.
  • Finally, photocopies are not accepted.

There is no application fee required for obtaining SIN documentation.

 Some Further Points.

If you are coming from abroad and your documentation is not written in either English or French, then you will need:

  • Any official translated document must be attested by a public notary, through a foreign government officer, or via an official at a British or Canadian consulate.
  • Most Birth Certificates and similar documentation will be accepted as part of a SIN application, however in some circumstances these documents may not be accepted.  Service Canada will need to be able to review these documents.

If You Have Lost Your SIN Information.

The best thing to do is to do in Canada is to contact the police. Then check all your bank statements and credit card details etc, to see if there are any irregularities.  A new number can be obtained from Service Canada.

This list would allow you to step into the backcountry and enjoy great hiking trip across Canada.

Navigational Equipment:

Apart from the traditional tools like maps and compass, you must also pack a wrist altimeter and a GPS. The topographic map would allow you to evaluate the footpath or most visited natural trail. Altimeter utilizes a barometric sensor for measuring air pressure and offers an accurate estimation of elevation. Compass and map together become a vital tool to prevent disorientation in the backcountry. High-tech GPS receivers are also helpful but don’t underestimate the power of compass because you might not get strong signals everywhere. Furthermore, the compass doesn’t require batteries and is a lightweight item. So do pack in a compass with a mirror, which you can use to flash sunlight to a rescuer or helicopter in case of an emergency.

Sun Protection:

Sunglasses with 100% UVA and UVB light blocking are essential and indispensable. Also, pack extra-dark glacier glasses if you have planned traveling on ice or snow. UVB rays would burn your skin and may develop cataracts. So be practical and pack quality sunglasses.

Also, pack sunscreen; select a formula that offers a sun protection factor (SPF) of 15 at least but SPF 30 is recommended for prolonged outdoor activities.

Synthetic, lightweight sun protection clothes would prevent ultraviolet rays as these come with an ultraviolet protection factor (UPF). Analyze your activity level and expected the temperature to choose pants or shorts and sleeveless or long/short sleeves.

Insulation:

To protect you when weather conditions suddenly change such as abrupt raining, chilly or windy conditions, carry an additional layer of clothing according to the season. Such as, a layer of thermal undergarments (shirt/trouser), balaclava/insulating hat, synthetic vest/jacket and extra socks are essential items.

Lighting:

You need to pack headlamps if you plan to hike in the backcountry to ensure hands-free operation. These are lightweight and compact to carry and battery life is also long. Many headlamps come with strobe mode, which is ideal for countering emergencies. Flashlight and packable lanterns are helpful in casting powerful beams and for giving out signals during an emergency situation. Pack extra batteries.

First-Aid Kit:

You can buy ready-made first-aid kits to save yourself the hassle. It is also possible to create your own to suit your needs. A first-aid kit must include adhesive tape, blister treatment, gauze pads, adhesive bandages in different sizes, disinfecting ointment, pen/paper, over-the-counter painkillers, Nitrile gloves and muscle relaxant.

Fire:

Pack waterproof matches and store them in a waterproof container. Always pack plenty of matches and also get some mechanical lighters. To jumpstart a fire pack fire starter because it ignites fire quickly and sustains heat longer.

Repairing Gear:

Pack knives and multi-tools to help you in the preparation of food or for cutting anything. Pack knives having 1 foldable blade, 1 to 2 flathead screwdrivers, and a can opener. Also, pack a pair of foldout scissors. Strips of duct tape also come in handy.

Food and water:

Pack food items that are freeze-dried and don’t require cooking with extended storage limit. Energy bars, nuts, and cookies are a must. Carry a bottle of water and one collapsible water reservoir.

Shelter:

To camp in the wilderness, packing a tent is necessary. Additionally, pack a space blanket, sleeping pad, and bivy sack.

Canada is a great option for camping and/or hiking. In fact for a variety of outdoor adventures, Canada serves as the best spot because of the vast range of wilderness, Rocky Mountains and an amazing combination of back and front camping. The designated camping sites by Parks Canada are fully facilitated with toilets, cafes and parking areas. You can hire tents, sleeping bags, stoves and cabins as well and opt for booking guided hiking, biking and kayaking packages as per your demand. Camping in Canada is fun really because it is so easy all you need is to pack your stuff and get a Parks Canada permit to camp. However, if you haven’t packed proper clothing, then the entire adventure would become a bane.

Therefore, follow this list of most essential clothing items for backpacker before gearing up to hike or camp anywhere in Canada.

How to Choose Materials?

Firstly, you need to know the kind of trail or camping spot you will be going to and the temperature of the place. This will help you decide about choosing the right clothing material. Ideally, you need to choose synthetic materials for keeping you dry and prevent soaking from sweating. A soft cotton tee would be your first priority but this sort of clothing should be avoided because such materials only trap moisture and sweat, which will make you uncomfortable.

You can choose Techwick, which offers a skin-tight base layer or other synthetic materials like polyester so that your body could breathe. Marino wool is excellent during cold and warm weather alike as it wicks moisture and odor away.

When it comes to shirts, most people feel confused between short and long sleeves. We suggest that you go for long sleeves no matter which season it is because short sleeves expose your arm to other issues such as insect bites, scratches, and sunburn.

Lower, Pants and Shorts:

You can hike in both shorts and pants; shorts are better in warm weather as these let your skin breathe and provide maximum relaxation. Shorts should be packed when you are going for a low-altitude summer hike. If the weather is colder or your hiking trail has heavy vegetation, choose pants made from spandex or nylon, as these materials dry quickly and are durable.  Pants protect your legs from several hazards such as from poison ivy or similar allergenic plants, wounds from thorns/stones and insect bites.

Footwear:

Hiking boots are a must have item. You must choose footwear that is durable, comfortable and compatible with the weather conditions. For excessively muddy or wet trail go for Gore-Tex or any other waterproof material boots; for rocky trails, you can get slightly higher on the ankle boots.

Don’t forget to pack the right socks; select socks that are made from wool or synthetic materials because your feet will stay drier.

Hats:

To ensure sunlight protection and prevent heat stroke, hats are indispensable. Go for full-brimmed, water-repellent materials in hats since these keep your head warm and protect your face when there is a storm.

Layering:

If you plan to go up in elevation, it is advised to choose three-layered clothing system because temperatures can drop significantly as you go up. Pack a base layer that is made from a quick-drying material, a mid-layer that is light to medium weight and made from fleece and a top layer which is waterproof and prevent wind or rain from damaging your clothing.
