Working at U-M Holidays and Season Days The university observes seven holidays: New Year's Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, the day following Thanksgiving and Christmas Day, and four Season Days.
Private employers. Private employers in Minnesota are not required to close on any of the listed holidays. Additionally, private employers are not required to allow employees to take either paid or unpaid time off on the holidays nor are they required to pay employees any premium wage rates to employees who work on the holidays.
All other holidays are celebrated on the date established. In Minnesota, the Executive Branch of state government does not receive Columbus Day as a paid holiday. The day after Thanksgiving is a paid holiday for the Executive Branch but the governor is given authority to declare that day a holiday for other branches of government as well.
