    The cost of living is insane. And I am a pretty well-paid software engineer, but its so crazy expensive there that you don't get any benefit from that. I never lived in the City, always on the peninsula / south bay, but even my old not very nice 2 bedroom apartment near San Jose is almost $3k/month now (twice what I paid in 2008).
