I'm in a medium COL area now. The house I own is much nicer than my last house (and about $50k cheaper too); a similar one where I used to live would have been $550k or better and still wouldn't have been as nicely built. Things like actually being able to afford rental units is a nice thing about not living in a high COL spot, too.
