Same boat! After 12 years, the constant competition of living in LA just got to be too much. It got to the point on the east side where it felt like just leaving the house was asking for a battle-- traffic, parking, table space at a restaurant, whatever; being in an area that is actually central to the city and in a desirable area requires a lot of money and effort nowadays.

We have some of the nicest beaches anywhere. And the road trips from Los Angeles are amazing, 4 hours away to Sequoia National Park, 4-5 hours to Death Valley, 4 hours to Baja Mexico, 5 hours to Vegas, 2 hours to Santa Barbara. The food is pretty great. Also, you can live here really inexpensively.

Cost of living--no where between LA, OC, or SD is going to be objectively cheap for a decent place (compared to most other parts of the country). That being said, each of those places is a massive market, and you can find deals. LA will probably be the most expensive of the 3, but just based on what I know, not even by a whole lot.

I've lived in Los Angeles for my entire life. I've lived both in the San Gabriel Valley (suburbs east of Downtown) and on the Westside (Culver City area). I think it's great living here. This is a major metropolitan area and there are millions of things to do here. I live 20 minutes from the beach and 2 hours from the mountains.

My income fluctuates between 65-80k and I won't be getting a raise to match cost of living but I will have an apartment provided for me close to the office (near Times Square). If I decide to live there permanently I'll have to find my own apartment and then they'll reassess my salary. Bad things: the people. The smells. The unceasing noise ...
